The First Higher Vocational Teachers' College in China
     Jilin Teachers’ Institute of Engineering and Technology, known as the cradle of vocational education teachers, is the first full-time college for vocational teachers’ training approved by the State Council and it is also the only full-time independent set of higher vocational teachers college in the three provinces in Northeast China and Inner Mongolia. There are 11,380 students in the institute, among whom, 8,476 are undergraduate and higher vocational students, and 2,904 are adults students.
National Key Construction Base
         
     The institute, formerly named Jilin Mechanic Teachers College under the supervision of the former State Bureau of Labor, was founded in 1979. In 1983, it was transferred the management authority to Jilin province and changed its name to Jilin Vocational Teachers College. In February 2002, it was renamed Jilin Teachers’ Institute of Engineering and Technology approved by the Ministry of Education. The institute is identified as the National Key Construction Base for the Training of Vocational Teachers and National Pilot School for Vocational and Technical Appraisal by the Ministry of Education, as well as the Vocational Education Research Center and Leading Construction Unit for Teachers-service Security System authorized by the People's Government of Jilin Province. We initiated the nation's first modern Vocational Education History Hall, first Vocational Education Museum and first National Vocational Education Development Database in order to establish National Documents and Data Monitoring Center for Vocational Education. The journal Vocational and Technical Education issued in our institute was listed as Chinese Journal of Double-effect Matrix, Chinese Core Journals, Core Journals of RCCSE and won the Credit Journal Award by Jilin Provincial People's Government.
Characteristics —Trinity and Unity
     The institution regards the vocational education as the core functions and the applied professional education as its main duty. We formed the pattern of trinity in higher normal education, higher engineering education and higher technical education, and mutual support for cultivating and training. On the property of the institute, we stressed on the unification of academic, vocational and normal education. On the characteristics of the institute, we aim to establish a Double-qualified Teachers’ Team and cultivate Double-qualified Talents, which aims to strengthen the students’ innovation capacity and practical skills so that the students will become qualified teachers and technicians. On connotation and carrier construction, we fortify the four basic functions of our school, namely, the supplier of vocational teachers, the guide of vocational scientific research, the prototype of vocational education and the leader of vocational culture. We  have been committed to the following four-center construction: vocational teachers’ cultivation, teachers training, scientific research and  information dissemination.
Achievements—Vocational Teachers’ Training Base
     
     For more than 30 years since the school was founded, we have cultivated and trained more than 20,000 excellent teachers and applied talents for vocational education and economic construction. In Jilin Province only, our graduates teaching vocational courses accounted for more than 30% in ordinary vocational schools and 50% in key vocational schools. Our institute also undertook national and provincial level training tasks for nearly 3,000 headmasters and backbone vocational teachers in the past 3 years. The institute was identified as the National Pilot School for Vocational Skills Appraisal by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the National Language Specification Demonstration Institute identified by the National Language Committee. Vocational and Technical Education Research Center was listed as the first batch Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of Higher Education in Jilin Province. The Apparel Design and Processing Center and Wine R & D Engineering Center were identified as the Engineering Research Center of Higher Education in Jilin Province. Electrical and Electronic Experimental Teaching Center and Experimental Teaching Center of Advanced Manufacturing Technology were honored as Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. Vocational and Technical Education, Art Design, Machinery Manufacturing and Automation were identified as the Leading Key Disciplines in Jilin Province .
International Exchange — Constantly Updated
     The institute continues to develop cooperation relationships with higher education from USA, Germany, South Korea, Canada, Japan and Taiwan in recent years. Now Sehan University in Korea (former Daebul University) has recognized sister-school with us and they have established Mandarin Test Center in Korea and we have set up The South Korean Culture Research and Education Center in China. In recent years, we exchange teachers and students for joint education and share resources in teaching and research. We also developed the cooperation with Pukyong National University of South Korea, West University of Japan, St Petersburg Institute of Technology, and Russian National Occupation Normal University in Russia. Take the cooperation with West University of Japan as an example, the program of young teachers training in Japan, short-term exchanges for backbone teachers, and students internships are well on the way. The joint project named Hotel Management 2+1 with Japanese Osaka YMCA International Training School has recruited students officially since 2009. Since 2011, we have developed good cooperation with five universities in Taiwan, like National Qinyi Science and Technology University. We have sent 37 students there for join education and several professors in our college became distinguished professors in Qinyi.
Facing the future—An Influential and Prestigious Professional Normal University
     The relocation to Changde New Industry Zone is underway. The new campus covers an area of 993,600 square meters, and the planning construction area is 499,300 square meters, and the number of students will reach 18,000 people. The first phase of the project will be completed in 2015. We are firmly seizing the favorable opportunities of the adjustment of industrial structure, economic layout and the development of vocational education. We will stand in the commanding point with the development of the times, and achieve the overall upgrade at the aspect of the functions and characteristics of the college. We are striving to establish an influential and prestigious multidisciplinary professional normal university with distinctive characteristics.
